2、A gondola glides along the Grand Canal. The traditional Venetian boats serve as ferries across the city's main waterway, though they are primarily used by tourists or for cultural events. A law dating to the 16th century requires that all of Venice's gondolas be painted black.

4、The belvedere atop the spiral staircase of the Palazzo Contarini del Bovolo, constructed in the 15th century, provides panoramic views of Venice.

5、Masks hang on the walls of a Venetian shop. Traditionally made of papier-mache by mascherari, the masks are used during Carnevale celebrations that envelop Venice for two weeks before Ash Wednesday.

6、The Doge's Palace exemplifies the city's Gothic architecture. The palace is home to the I Piombi prison, from which swashbuckling libertine Giacomo Casanova made a daring escape in 1755.

7、Venice's Grand Canal attracts nearly 15 million visitors each year.
