A bird soars over the lichen-draped remains of Manorbier Castle in Wales. At its height in the 12th century, the castle consisted of a gatehouse, a keep, two towers, and a vaulted chapel enclosed within two high stone curtain walls. Originally built as a fortified manor house, this medieval castle never encountered attack, which is why it remains remarkably well-preserved today.

Oman was once considered an Arabian Peninsula backwater, with only about six miles (3 kilometers) of paved roads as recently as 1970. Oil production, however, which began around 1967, quickly catapulted this sultanate of 3 million inhabitants to unimaginable prosperity.

Ripples of lava frozen in time wrinkle the surface of Pinnacle Rock off the Galápagos’ Bartolome Island. The formation is the eroded remains of a volcanic tower known as a tuff cone. Tuff cones are formed when magma from an inland volcano reaches the sea, sputtering layer upon layer of basalt ash that eventually rises into this monument of nature.

Photo in the News: Housefly Gets Glasses Made With Lasers

An entry in a German science-photo competition, this image shows a fly sporting a set of "designer" lenses crafted and set in place with a cutting-edge laser technique. The glasses fit snuggly on the fly's 0.08-inch-wide (2-millimeter-wide) head.

Manufacturing firm Micreon GmbH submitted the insect's picture for the Bilder der Forschung (Photos of Science) 2005 competition. Selected images were on display last week in a Munich shopping center.

Micreon, based in Hannover, Germany (see map), created the fly's eyewear using ultrafast laser micro-machining. The firm notes on its Web site that the process can create objects with high precision at scales of less than a thousandth of a millimeter.

Photo Gallery: "Lost World" of New Species Found in Indonesia

The golden-mantled tree kangaroo is just one of dozens of species discovered in late 2005 by a team of Indonesian, Australian, and U.S. scientists on the island of New Guinea.

The animal is the rarest arboreal, jungle-dwelling kangaroo in the world, the researchers say. This was the first time the mammal was found in Indonesia, making it only the second site in the world where the species is known to exist.

The kangaroo was discovered on an expedition in the Foja Mountains of Indonesia.

The National Geographic Society, Conservation International, and the Biology Research Center of the Indonesian Institute of Sciences supported the expedition.

Photo in the News: Giant Jellyfish Invade Japan

Since last summer, Japanese waters have been inundated with the massive sea creatures, which can grow 6.5 feet (2 meters) wide and weigh up to 450 pounds (220 kilograms).

Though the jellyfish are more common in Chinese and Korean waters, their numbers have grown a hundredfold in some areas off Japan, causing a crisis in the local fishing industry.

Another theory suggests that seas heated by global warming are better suited for breeding, turning the Nomura's otherwise modest numbers into an armada.

Photo in the News: Rare "Rainbow" Spotted Over Idaho

It looks like a rainbow that's been set on fire, but this phenomenon is as cold as ice.

Known in the weather world as a circumhorizontal arc, this rare sight was caught on film on June 3 as it hung over northern Idaho near the Washington State border (map of Idaho).

The arc isn't a rainbow in the traditional sense—it is caused by light passing through wispy, high-altitude cirrus clouds. The sight occurs only when the sun is very high in the sky (more than 58° above the horizon). What's more, the hexagonal ice crystals that make up cirrus clouds must be shaped like thick plates with their faces parallel to the ground.

Photo in the News: Python Eats Pregnant Sheep

A fresh lamb dinner might sound like a manageable meal for an 18-foot-long (5.5-meter-long) python. But maybe the hungry snake should have waited for the lamb to be born.

Last week firefighters in the Malaysian village of Kampung Jabor were called in to remove the bloated snake (pictured) from a roadway. The reptile had swallowed an entire pregnant sheep and was too full to slither away and digest its supersize meal.

In July a pet Burmese python in Idaho required life-saving surgery to remove a queen-size electric blanket from its digestive tract .
